A SUCCESSFUL STORY OF A SURGICAL OPERATION OF A HAND THAT WAS DETTACHED

Can an arm which had been separated be connected again by a surgery?
This strange surgery was conducted at the Colombo General hospital. On the 31st of last month, 17 year old Sakin Rajeewa, a resident of Kaludewala had been involved in a quarrel at around at around 10 p.m in the night. Unknown personnel who had come in a three wheeler had entered Sakin’s house and cut Sakin’s hand and made an escape. It had separated his right hand into two and his family members had admitted him immediately to the hospital. The staff at the Panadura General hospital had transferred him to Colombo General Hospital at the dawn of Friday. It was a dream from his family to even think that his hand can be cured.
But the plastic surgery unit of the Colombo General Hospital had assured that they could replace the hand and bring it back to its normal state. Dr. Amila  Siriwardane, the plastic surgeon of Colombo General Hospital had undertaken this duty under the supervision of Dr. Thushan Beneragama, Plastic surgery Specialist. Dr. Thushara Munasinghe and Dr. D.S Kumara had given their support for this task.
The operation which has started at around 1.30 a.m. in the morning had been successfully ended at 10.30 a.m after 9 hours. The doctors have stated that first they had to do a joining of the bones and they have used iron straps to fit the dislocated areas. Then they have tried to connect the nerves which had been damaged during the injury. In the process they had connected three main arteries.
They have also stated that they had used a microscope to connect the arteries and the veins. It is reported that Sakin has been transferred to a ward and that he after which he was able to move his hand.
Dr. Siriwardane had stated that he undertook the surgery as the wound was in a better state to be operated. Further, he had said that it is recommended to hospitalize the patient immediately with the broken limb on ice. He had said that even though Sakin’s hand was not brought with ice, they had been able to do the surgery as he had been hospitalized immediately.
The police are conducting further investigations to find out the culprit.
